IVT is an excellent route of administration to receive medicine and/or supplements because they have an absorption rate of 100% into the bloodstream. Unfortunately, oral supplementation is of limited effectiveness because the cells lining our intestine can only work so hard to absorb nutrients. Therefore, if a person is consuming too much of a nutrient the remainder will be unabsorbed in the bowels, which can result in an osmotic shift of water into the bowels causing loose stools. When administering by IV “bowel tolerance” is avoided ensuring an adequate dose is making its way into the blood and, therefore, cells. Bowel tolerance is seen with many nutrients (ie: Vitamin C, amino acids); IV’s avoid this and allow an even greater therapeutic dose of this nutrient to be in the circulation. For this reason, IVT is commonly provided for patients who are under a significant amount of stress, have adrenal fatigue, during many acute and chronic infections, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, some cardiovascular diseases, and to those who seek to improve athletic performance.
