- Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is on its way to becoming an epidemic in North Americans. DM is the 4th leading medically-related cause of death. Currently it affects nearly 6% of the population and health care spending on this disease is in the hundreds of billions of dollars and both of these figures are projected to increase annually. There are two forms of DM: Type 1 (Insulin Dependent DM) and Type 2 (Non-Insulin Dependent DM). The important point to note is that NIDDM is by far the most prevalent and is nearly always associated with inadequate nutrition, insulin resistance, and weight management issues. These therapeutic targets are largely preventable and are cornerstones for Dr. Atkins’ successful treatment of DM. A thorough assessment of the patient is necessary to prevent progression of this disorder. Lab values including fasting blood sugar and insulin levels, HgA1c, and glucose tolerance testing should all be monitored to ensure prevention of consequences of uncontrolled DM such as atherosclerosis, retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, renal disease, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). For more information on CVD please read the following section on Metabolic/Cardiometabolic syndrome.
