FMS has only recently been accepted by (some members of) the conventional medical community as a physiological condition, rather than an entirely ‘psychological’ (re: psychiatric) condition. Allopathic treatments rely on antidepressants, painkillers, and even antiseizure meds, yet all of these are bandaid solutions that fail to address what is really going on. Naturopathic medicine goes one step further to suggest that there is an interplay of both physiologic and psychologic mechanisms that are at work and must be fully understood to formulate an effective diagnosis. In simpler terms it is important to address the pain using natural therapies such as neural therapy, acupuncture, detoxification, nutrition, and gentle movement therapies to normalize neurotransmitters and reduce inflammation, while encouraging patients to deal with their stress and other negative emotions to separate from a “pain body”, as Eckhart Tolle would describe, and rejuvenate the mind. Patients suffering from fibromyalgia might try reading the section on chronic fatigue syndrome (link) for additional insight into their symptoms.
