The prostate gland is responsible for producing a portion of the fluid in ejaculate. It is a walnut-sized gland surrounding the urethra. Between puberty and age 30 it grows rapidly, at which point it remains about the same size until a man reaches the age of 45. It is not currently known why the prostate grows from this point until the end of the man’s life but it seems that an increase in testosterone (DHT) is a large factor.
- Men with prostate enlargement may have difficulty, or pain, with urination or ejaculation, urinary frequency and dribbling, incomplete bladder voiding, and occasionally discomfort when sitting.
- Naturopathic medicine seeks to identify underlying causes of prostate enlargement (hyperplasia) and create a treatment that will help prevent further growth and may help to reverse pathological enlargement. Diets high in pesticides, chemicals, cholesterol, and alcohol are associated with prostate enlargement, as are those low in essential nutrients like zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Various botanicals and nutritional supplements have been shown to reduce DHT formation thereby inhibiting further prostate enlargement.
