- Hypertension is classified as either primary (essential) or secondary. Secondary hypertension indicates that a medical cause (kidney disease, tumors) are the cause of the hypertension while primary does not. By far the leading form of hypertension is primary (~95%) which has several risk factors including inactive lifestyles, obesity, stress, excessive sodium, alcohol, and intake other dietary factors, and various metabolic disorders. Prolonged hypertension can damage many organs in the body and drastically reduce quality of life. Genes may increase the risk of one developing hypertension, yet the disease is easily controlled by lifestyle and dietary modifications, and a variety of other naturopathic modalities such as herbs, and nutritional supplementation.
- Chronic hypotension is conventionally viewed as a “low normal”, yet in naturopathic medicine, these patients often visit or office complaining of low energy, and occasional lightheadedness. The adrenal glands are intricately related to blood pressure and must be considered as these people often are suffering from adrenal deficiency, or fatigue, if not due to any secondary medical cause. Additionally, using Chinese medicine we might consider this person to have symptoms of a manifestation of a “deficient” syndrome. It is important to address these elements while balancing each of the systems controlling blood pressure.
