- IBS has many different forms that may predominate, diarrhea, constipation, pain and discomfort, or alternating between all any/all of these. IT is important to rule out a variety of other diseases before settling for a diagnosis of IBS including celiac disease, dysbiosis, parasitic and other infectious agents, food allergies, and any of the culprits that may contribute to pain, diarrhea, or constipation. IBS is a functional disorder that does not appear to be organic, suggesting a large mental/emotional component, however, it is noteworthy that many people only began experiencing IBS symptoms after a gastrointestinal infection. Currently there is no conventional cure for IBS so typically they use medications to manage symptoms exclusively. Studies have shown that a great deal of patients with IBS also suffer comorbidities including chronic headache, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and depression. Identifying obstacles to cure are an important element in promoting healing. Fortunately, naturopathic medicine offers a variety of treatments for IBS that not only help to relieve but can also reverse symptoms, improving quality of life.
