Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) PDF Print E-mail
  • PUD is characterized by an erosion(s) in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract resulting in pain and digestive disturbance. They may be present in either the stomach or the duodenum (just after the stomach in the beginning of the small intestine). Ulcers allowed to progress can result in nausea and vomiting, blood loss, and potentially perforation, and malignancy. Those who have a history of GERD, prolonged stress and inflammation, dysbiosis, NSAID use, and many steroids are especially at risk of developing PUD. Conventional treatment relies heavily on antibiotics for this condition, treating it like an “infection”. Unfortunately this treatment is limited in its efficacy in most people because in most people it does not identifying and treat the cause. Many physicians are quick to prescribe these drugs while failing to recognize that a person may be taking NSAIDS to relieve the pain, or without teaching them effective coping mechanisms to reduce stress. Additionally, those who have been given antibiotics need to be given a course of probiotics to reinoculate their system with health promoting bacteria to prevent recurrence and prevent systemic dysbiosis. Using herbal medicine, homeopathic preparations, and nutritional supplementation will aid internal relief and help to accelerate healing of these tissues.
